Portuguese Cut Diamond Jewellery

A Portuguese cut is a diamond with extra rows of triangular facets on the crown and pavilion, giving it around 161 facets compared with 57 or 58 on a standard round brilliant. The extra facets produce many small flashes of light and strong fire, so the stone looks unusually lively.

It sparkles differently. A round brilliant gives fewer, larger flashes of white light; a Portuguese cut gives many finer flashes with more colour. The Portuguese is cut deeper, so it looks slightly smaller across at the same carat weight. Buyers who want the most lively stone usually prefer it; buyers who want maximum spread prefer a round brilliant.

Cutting 161 facets takes far more time and wastes more rough than a standard cut, so it was rarely used on mined diamonds except large stones. Lab grown rough is affordable enough to make the cut practical at 1 to 3 carat, which is why it is now available in solitaire rings and studs.

Yes. Every Portuguese cut diamond at Ivana Jewels carries an IGI or SGL certificate recording carat weight, colour, clarity and measurements. The certificate describes the shape as round or cushion modified brilliant; the facet count is what makes it a Portuguese cut.

A Portuguese cut costs somewhat more per carat than a standard round brilliant of the same grade because of the extra cutting work, but a lab grown Portuguese cut is still a fraction of the price of a mined diamond. Prices are recalculated daily against the prevailing gold rate, so the product page always shows the current figure.
