Diamond prices in India depend on five things: carat weight, cut, colour, clarity and whether the stone is lab grown or mined. At the same carat weight and grades, a lab grown diamond costs a fraction of a natural one, and the gap has widened every year since 2020 as production in Surat has scaled. This guide explains how the price of a diamond and of a finished piece of jewellery is built, what each carat size buys, and how to compare quotes. Ivana Jewels recalculates every price daily against the gold rate, so where this page mentions a price it links to the live collection rather than printing a figure that would be wrong by next week.
Lab grown vs natural diamond price in India
A natural diamond's price pays for rarity, exploration, mining and several rounds of trading before the stone reaches a jeweller. A lab grown diamond is grown to order in three to eight weeks and cut in the same factories, so none of that cost exists. The result at the same grades:
| Carat weight | Natural diamond, typical range in India | Lab grown diamond, typical | See today's lab grown price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 carat | Mid five figures to low six figures | A fraction of the natural price; the gold in the setting is often the larger cost | Solitaire rings |
| 1 carat | Low to high lakhs depending on grades | A fraction of the natural price at the same grades | 1 carat rings |
| 1.5 carat | Several lakhs and up | A fraction of the natural price | 1.5 carat rings |
| 2 carat | High single-digit lakhs and up | A fraction of the natural price; the most popular upgrade size | 2 carat rings |
| 3 carat | Tens of lakhs | A fraction of the natural price | 3 carat rings |
Natural diamond prices rise steeply at each carat step because large rough is rare. Lab grown prices rise more gently, because a 2 carat stone takes only somewhat longer to grow than a 1 carat one. That is why 2 and 3 carat lab grown rings are now common where 2 carat natural rings were not.
How the price of a diamond ring is built
A quote for finished jewellery has four parts. Ask any jeweller to break them out; Ivana Jewels product pages list the diamond weight and gold weight separately.
| Component | What sets it | Share of a typical lab grown ring |
|---|---|---|
| Diamond | Carat weight, colour, clarity, cut, certification | Largest share above about 1 carat; smaller share below |
| Gold | Gold weight in grams x today's rate for 9kt, 14kt or 18kt | Often the largest share for rings under 1 carat, bangles and necklaces |
| Making charges | Complexity of the setting; a halo or pave costs more to make than a solitaire | A few percent to over ten percent |
| GST | 3% on the finished piece | 3% |
Because gold is such a large share, a ring's price moves with the daily gold rate even when the diamond price is unchanged. Two quotes for "a 1 carat ring" can differ by a wide margin purely on gold weight and purity. How Ivana Jewels calculates prices explains the daily mechanism.
What changes the diamond part of the price
- Carat weight. The biggest single factor. Prices step up at 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 carat; a 0.9 carat stone costs noticeably less than a 1.0 carat and looks the same size.
- Colour. D to F is colourless and costs most; G to H is near-colourless and is the value choice for most settings. Below J a warm tint shows in white gold.
- Clarity. VS1 and VS2 are eye-clean at almost any size. Paying for VVS or IF buys a certificate grade, not a visible difference, except in large step cuts like emerald.
- Cut. Excellent or Ideal cut is the one grade worth paying for, because it decides how much light the stone returns.
- Shape. Round costs most per carat because it wastes the most rough. Oval, pear, cushion and emerald cost less per carat and look larger than a round of the same weight.
- Certification. IGI and SGL are the standard laboratories for lab grown diamonds in India. A stone without a certificate should be priced as uncertified; see IGI vs SGL.
Price by carat: what each size buys
Under 0.5 carat
Everyday rings, studs and pendants. The gold and making charges usually cost more than the diamond, so gold purity and weight are the numbers to compare. Browse rings by price.
0.5 carat
The classic daily-wear solitaire and the most gifted stud and pendant size. At this weight the difference between lab grown and natural is large in percentage terms but the absolute saving is smaller than at 1 carat.
1 carat
The benchmark engagement ring size in India. This is where lab grown changed the market: a 1 carat lab grown solitaire sits at a budget that would buy a much smaller natural stone. Read the 1 carat price guide.
1.5 to 2 carat
The most common upgrade sizes. A 2 carat lab grown ring is now a mainstream engagement purchase; in natural diamonds it remains a luxury purchase. Read the 2 carat price guide.
3 carat and above
Statement sizes. Grades matter more here because colour and inclusions are easier to see in a large stone. Browse 3 carat rings.
How to compare diamond quotes
- Compare stones at the same carat, colour, clarity and cut. A cheaper quote is usually a lower grade, not a better deal.
- Ask for gold weight and purity separately. Gold is where most price differences between jewellers hide.
- Check the certificate is from IGI, SGL or GIA and that the inscription on the girdle matches it.
- Ask what the buyback and exchange terms are in writing. Ivana Jewels offers lifetime buyback at 80% of the prevailing diamond value and 100% of the prevailing gold value, and lifetime exchange at 100% of market rate; see the buyback guide.
- Check whether the price includes GST and the certificate.
Frequently asked questions
What is the price of a 1 carat diamond in India?
It depends on whether it is lab grown or natural and on the grades. A natural 1 carat diamond is priced in lakhs; a lab grown 1 carat diamond at the same grades is a fraction of that, and the finished ring price moves daily with the gold rate. See today's 1 carat ring prices.
Why are lab grown diamonds so much cheaper?
They are grown to order in weeks, so there is no mining or rough trading in their cost. The stone itself is identical.
Will lab grown diamond prices fall further?
Loose stone prices have fallen each year as production has scaled, and the trend has not reversed. Finished jewellery prices are cushioned by gold, which has risen. Buy for wearing, not as an investment, in either case.
Is GST charged on diamonds in India?
Yes, 3% on finished diamond jewellery.
Does the diamond price include the certificate?
At Ivana Jewels, yes. Replacement certificates cost ₹2,000 per carat for IGI and ₹1,000 per carat for SGL.
