How Lab Grown Diamond Prices Are Calculated in India

The price of a finished piece of lab grown diamond jewellery in India is the sum of four things: the diamond, the gold, the making charges and GST. The diamond is usually the part buyers focus on, but on smaller stones the gold often costs more. Because the gold rate moves daily, the price of the same piece genuinely changes from one day to the next.

The four components

1. The diamond

Priced on the 4Cs: carat weight, colour, clarity and cut. Carat has the steepest effect, and not linearly. A 2 carat stone costs considerably more than two 1 carat stones, because larger rough is harder to grow and cut without waste.

Colour and clarity matter less than most buyers assume above a certain threshold. A VS2 stone in the G to H colour range is indistinguishable from a VVS1 D stone to an unaided eye. The money saved there buys visible carat weight.

Cut is the one grade worth protecting. A poorly cut diamond looks dull regardless of its other grades, and no amount of colour or clarity rescues it.

2. The gold

Calculated as weight in grams multiplied by the prevailing rate for that purity. This is the component that moves daily.

It is also the component that explains why two rings with identical 1 carat centre stones can differ substantially in price. A plain solitaire band might use 2 grams of gold. A cathedral or halo setting in the same karat might use 5 or 6. At current rates that difference alone can run to tens of thousands of rupees.

14kt contains less pure gold than 18kt, so it costs less per gram and is harder and more scratch-resistant. 18kt has a richer colour. Both are BIS hallmarked.

3. Making charges

The cost of manufacturing: casting, setting each stone, polishing and finishing. Usually quoted either as a percentage of the gold value or as a flat rate per gram.

Intricate work costs more. Pave setting, where dozens of small stones are individually set, carries far higher making charges than a single solitaire in four prongs, even where the total diamond weight is similar.

Making charges are not refunded at buyback or exchange. This is standard across the industry and worth factoring in when choosing between an elaborate setting and a simpler one.

4. GST

Why the price changes between visits

Most jewellery websites in India set a price and leave it until someone updates a spreadsheet. That means the displayed price drifts away from the actual gold rate, and the gap is settled at the counter, usually in the retailer’s favour.

Ivana Jewels recalculates prices across the full catalogue daily against the prevailing gold rate. The consequence is that the price you see is the price today, and it may be different next week in either direction.

This is why our pages do not quote fixed starting prices. Any number written into an article is wrong within weeks, and a buyer who arrives expecting it has been misled.

Where the weight can change after you order

For made-to-order pieces, the finished gold weight may differ slightly from the estimate, because handwork is not exact. Ivana Jewels adjusts for this either way.

If a piece is listed at approximately 2.3 grams and is produced at 2.6 grams, the additional gold cost is charged before shipping. If it comes in at 2.1 grams, the difference is refunded before delivery.

The adjustment is calculated at the same discounted gold rate that applied on the day you purchased, not the rate on the day of adjustment. Worth confirming that this is the case wherever you buy, because the alternative can quietly cost you.

Why lab grown costs less than mined

A lab grown diamond is chemically, physically and optically identical to a mined one, and is graded by the same laboratories on the same scale. The difference is supply. Mined diamond supply is geologically constrained and tightly managed; lab grown supply is a manufacturing question.

The practical effect for a buyer is that a given budget reaches a noticeably larger or cleaner stone. Most people use the difference to move up one or two carat weights rather than to spend less.

How to spend a fixed budget well

• Protect cut. It is the grade that determines whether a stone looks alive.
• Drop colour and clarity to the eye-clean threshold. Around VS2 and G to H for most stones. The saving is real and the difference is not visible.
• Choose a simpler setting if you want a larger stone. Gold and making charges are where a surprising share of the budget goes.
• Consider 14kt for daily wear. Less gold cost, and harder wearing.
• Consider shape. Oval and marquise cuts cover more finger than a round stone of the same carat weight, so they read larger for the same money.

Questions to ask before paying

1. What is the diamond weight, separately from the gross weight of the piece?
2. What is the gold weight and karat?
3. How are making charges calculated, and what are they on this piece?
4. Is the price fixed, or does it move with the gold rate?
5. If the finished weight differs, at which rate is the difference settled?

A retailer who answers all five without checking with a manager is being straightforward with you.
