Lab grown diamonds do have resale value, but it is lower than the resale value of natural diamonds, and neither type of diamond resells at its retail price. What decides how much you get back is not the origin of the stone but the buyback policy of the jeweller you bought it from. At Ivana Jewels, every piece carries lifetime buyback at 80% of the prevailing diamond value and 100% of the prevailing gold value, and lifetime exchange at 100% of the current market rate for both. This guide explains how resale works, why the open-market figure is low, and how a written buyback policy changes the answer.

Why open-market resale of lab grown diamonds is low
- Supply is not scarce. Lab grown diamonds are grown to order, so there is no rarity premium to recover on resale.
- Retail prices keep falling. Production has scaled quickly since 2020, especially in Surat, so a stone bought two years ago competes with cheaper new stones.
- The second-hand network is young. Dealers and auction houses that trade natural diamonds have not yet built the same channels for lab grown.
- Gold is a growing share of the price. In a finished piece the gold often costs as much as the diamond, and gold resells at close to full market value. That is why buyback terms should state diamond and gold separately.
How Ivana Jewels' buyback and exchange work
At Ivana Jewels, lifetime buyback pays 80% of the prevailing diamond value and 100% of the prevailing gold value on the day you sell back. Lifetime exchange pays 100% of the current market rate for diamonds and gold against a new piece. Making charges, discounts and GST are deducted in both cases. Diamond value exchanges against diamond value only; any diamond value left over after an exchange is paid at the buyback rate. Polki does not exchange against faceted diamonds. If the certificate is lost, replacement costs ₹2,000 per carat for IGI and ₹1,000 per carat for SGL. The full wording is on the All Policies page and worked examples are in the buyback guide.
Because gold is bought back at 100%, a piece where gold is half the price recovers far more than the 20 to 40% open-market figure suggests. That is the practical difference between selling to a dealer and selling back to the brand that sold it to you.
How to protect resale value
- Buy certified. An IGI or SGL certificate with the number inscribed on the girdle is what any buyer, including Ivana, uses to value the stone. See how to read a diamond certificate.
- Get the buyback terms in writing before you pay. Ask for the diamond percentage and the gold percentage separately, and what is deducted.
- Keep the certificate, invoice and packaging. A missing certificate costs ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 per carat to replace.
- Choose popular shapes and eye-clean grades. Round, oval and pear in G to H colour and VS clarity are the easiest to value and re-sell.
- Keep the piece in good condition. Damage, missing stones or work done by another jeweller lead to deductions on inspection.
The right way to think about it
Buy a lab grown diamond to wear, not as a financial asset. Neither natural nor lab grown diamonds appreciate for ordinary buyers. What a lab grown diamond gives you is a larger, cleaner stone for the same money, identical material and grading, and, from Ivana Jewels, a written exit at 80% of diamond value and 100% of gold value for the life of the piece.
Frequently asked questions
Do lab grown diamonds have resale value?
Yes. On the open market, typically 20 to 40% of the purchase price. Through Ivana Jewels' buyback, 80% of the prevailing diamond value and 100% of the prevailing gold value, less making charges, discounts and GST.
Why is lab grown resale lower than natural?
Because supply is not scarce, retail prices keep falling and the second-hand market is still developing. Natural diamonds also resell well below retail; the gap is smaller in absolute terms than the price difference suggests.
What is the resale value of a 1 carat lab grown diamond?
It depends on the day's diamond and gold rates and the buyback policy. At Ivana Jewels it is 80% of that day's diamond value plus 100% of that day's gold value. See the live 1 carat collection for current prices.
Does the certificate affect resale?
Yes. A stone without an IGI or SGL certificate is valued as uncertified. Replacing a lost certificate costs ₹2,000 per carat (IGI) or ₹1,000 per carat (SGL).
Is exchange better than buyback?
Usually. Exchange pays 100% of current market rate for both diamond and gold against a new piece; buyback pays 80% of diamond value as cash. If you want new jewellery, exchange; if you want money, buyback.
