An engagement ring is given at the proposal or roka and usually carries a single prominent diamond; a wedding ring is exchanged at the ceremony and is usually a band, plain or set with a row of small diamonds, worn next to the engagement ring. In India the two traditions overlap with the sagai ring, the plain gold band, and in many families the mangalsutra, so couples often buy one, two or three rings across the engagement and the wedding. This guide explains the difference, which finger and hand each is worn on in India, how to pair them so they sit together, and what to spend on each. Ivana Jewels makes both: engagement rings and wedding rings, in BIS hallmarked 9kt, 14kt and 18kt gold with IGI or SGL certified lab grown diamonds.
The difference in one table
| Engagement ring | Wedding ring (band) | |
|---|---|---|
| When it is given | Proposal, roka or sagai | At the wedding ceremony or reception ring exchange |
| Who wears it | Traditionally the bride; increasingly both partners | Both partners |
| Design | A centre diamond, often a solitaire, halo or three-stone | A band: plain, half eternity, full eternity or channel-set |
| Diamond weight | One larger stone, commonly 0.5 to 2 carat | Many small stones, commonly 0.2 to 1 carat total, or none |
| Worn daily? | Often, though some keep it for occasions | Almost always daily |
| Typical share of the budget | The larger share | The smaller share, often a third or less of the engagement ring |
| Matching | Chosen first | Chosen to sit flush against the engagement ring |
Which hand and finger in India
In most of India the engagement ring goes on the ring finger of the right hand, which is considered the auspicious hand, and many couples keep it there. Christian and some urban families follow the Western convention of the left hand. The wedding band follows the engagement ring: same finger, same hand, worn closest to the knuckle with the engagement ring outside it, or the band inside (closer to the palm) in the Western stacking order. There is no rule that applies everywhere; choose the hand your family uses and keep both rings together. Men usually wear a single band on the right ring finger. See ring finger for men.
How to pair them so they sit together
- Match the metal. Same colour and ideally same karat, so wear is even and the colours do not clash. A 14kt white gold engagement ring takes a 14kt white gold band.
- Match the profile. A solitaire set high on claws takes a straight band; a low bezel or halo may need a curved or contoured band so there is no gap.
- Match the width. A 2 mm engagement ring shank looks balanced with a 2 to 2.5 mm band; a wide band next to a slim shank looks mismatched.
- Buy the band last. Choose the engagement ring, then try bands against it in a showroom. Ivana Jewels will make a contoured band to fit any of its engagement rings.
- Consider a bridal set. Some engagement rings are sold with a matching band designed for them; see couple rings.
Do you need both?
No. Many Indian couples exchange one ring at the sagai and wear it as both. Others add a plain band at the wedding, and some add a diamond eternity band on the first anniversary. A single ring worn daily should be in 14kt for hardness, with the diamond in a low setting; a ring kept for occasions can be higher-set and in 18kt. If you are buying only one ring, a solitaire on a slim band is the most versatile choice; see solitaire rings.
What to spend
There is no rule. The "three months' salary" idea is American marketing from the 1980s and has no basis in Indian practice. What does apply: the engagement ring carries most of the budget because it carries the centre stone; the band is usually a third or less. With lab grown diamonds, the same budget buys a larger centre stone at the same grades, which is why 1 and 2 carat engagement rings are now mainstream. Ivana Jewels prices are recalculated daily against the gold rate; the diamond ring price guide explains what drives the number, and the wedding ring collection shows live band prices.
Men's wedding rings
Men's bands run wider (4 to 8 mm) and heavier, usually in 14kt or 18kt yellow or white gold, with or without a row of small diamonds. Comfort-fit interiors (slightly domed inside) are worth asking for on a wide band. See men's diamond rings.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an engagement ring and a wedding ring?
The engagement ring is given at the proposal or sagai and carries a centre diamond; the wedding ring is a band exchanged at the ceremony and worn next to it.
Which finger is the engagement ring worn on in India?
Most commonly the right-hand ring finger; left hand in Christian and some urban families. The wedding band goes on the same finger.
Can the engagement ring be used as the wedding ring?
Yes, and many Indian couples do exactly that. Choose a low setting in 14kt if it will be worn daily.
Should the wedding band have diamonds?
Either. A plain band is traditional and durable; a half eternity band adds sparkle without stones on the palm side, where they would wear. Full eternity bands cannot be resized.
Does the wedding ring have to match the engagement ring?
It does not have to, but matching metal and profile makes the two sit together and wear evenly. Ivana Jewels can make a contoured band for any of its engagement rings.
